Exercises to get relief from Neck & arm pain ( cervical radiculopathy)

Cervical radiculopathy is a medical condition that occurs when a nerve root in the cervical (neck) spine becomes compressed or irritated, leading to pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling in the areas of the body that the affected nerve serves. This condition is typically caused by the herniation of a cervical disc, degenerative changes in the spine, bone spurs, or other structural issues in the neck.

Common symptoms of cervical radiculopathy include:  --

Neck pain: - Pain is often present in the neck and may radiate down the arm.

Arm pain: - Sharp or burning pain may extend from the neck down to the arm and even into the fingers.

Numbness and tingling: - Patients may experience a loss of sensation or abnormal sensations in the affected arm.

Muscle weakness: - Weakness in the muscles served by the affected nerve root can occur, leading to difficulty with fine motor skills and muscle control.

Exercises play a vital role in the management and treatment of cervical radiculopathy. They can help in several ways:

Pain Management: Specific exercises can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation in the affected area. Gentle range of motion exercises and stretches may be recommended to improve flexibility and decrease discomfort.

Strengthening: Strengthening exercises target the muscles that support the cervical spine. Building strength in these muscles can help stabilize the neck and reduce the risk of further injury.

Posture Improvement: Poor posture can contribute to cervical radiculopathy. Exercises and postural training can help individuals maintain a healthy neck posture, reducing strain on the cervical spine.

Nerve Gliding Exercises: These exercises are designed to gently mobilize and glide the affected nerve root, potentially relieving compression and reducing symptoms.

It's important to note that not all exercises are suitable for everyone with cervical radiculopathy, as the choice of exercises depends on the severity of the condition, individual factors, and the guidance of a healthcare professional. Therefore, it's essential for individuals experiencing cervical radiculopathy to consult with a physiotherapist to determine the most appropriate exercise regimen for their specific condition. Additionally, some cases of cervical radiculopathy may require medical interventions such as medication, injections, or surgery  to alleviate symptoms and address the underlying cause.
